ITEM: OpenAI has rolled out a new update that’s supposed to make it easier to talk with ChatGPT, using your voice.<\/p>\n

ITEM: OpenAI plans to release a mysterious device, created by famed designer Jony Ive. We still don’t know much about it except that 1) it likely won’t have a screen, and that 2) you will likely interact with it using your voice.<\/p>\n

You see where I’m going with this?<\/p>\n

Yes, having a better voice interface could help OpenAI right now. But it seems like it will be crucial, in the future, for the yet-to-be-announced Ive device: If that thing doesn’t have a screen, then you’re going to have<\/em> to talk to it. So the voice stuff better be up to snuff.<\/p>\n

Here’s where I’m really going: I’m happy to be wrong about this. But I think any personal computing device, from any company, that doesn’t have a screen is going to be a very, very hard sell.<\/p>\n

I understand why OpenAI, among other tech companies, is interested in screen-less devices. There are at least two reasons.<\/p>\n
